Computer fails to install windows POST and BIOS work install fails

I have been trying to get this board to work for a long time and have failed at every turn.

I bought it new off ebay so there is no warranty it will POST and i can setup on BIOS menu but
when i try to install i windows it dies about 90% done installing. I have two brand new legit versions
of XP and have also tried acronis disk keeper, runs but also fails to install,and another freeware OS.
I thought it might be the drive so i tried two others and it fails to format or install to either. The board
is a ASRock 4coredual-sata2 r2.0.

Please help me.

Hi squall987

When you say it fails to install, do you get any errors? does it hang? reboot?

If its about 90% then windows got pretty far in, so maybe device driver related. Another possibility is bad memory.

Can you elaborate a little please?

There are no errors when i try to install it just shuts down
and whenever i try to turn it back on i have to clear the CMOS
get it to come back up otherwise it just shuts off if i go to turn
it back on. And i just bought new memory from frys and a new
PSU. Maybe DOA CMOS or board?

Hmm sounds like it maybe a hardware problem then.

If you have to set the bios to defaults then it could be a memory error or the timing might be too aggressive.
Have you got any other memory to test with? Have you tried re-seating all of your components? (if applicable)Is the E-Atx 24 pin seated correctly? Is the 12v Cpu connector seated ok?

Just a few things you might be able to try before you start replacing stuff. But it could be possible that the mobo is faulty. Also check you havent put too much (or too little) thermal paste on the cpu and that the fan is seated correctly also. Best bet would be to remove everything and start again (a pain i know but it may just be something trivial) Many a time ive removed memory sticks and re-seated them and all the pain went away lol :thumbsup:

I tried reseating everything and changed the termal compound. It started failing earlier to POST but when i put new paste on it started coming right back up although it wont stay on too long before it dies. I got a chance to watch the core temp vs motherboard temp in the BIOS and the core temp was rising 1c per second till it hit 60c then shutoff could it be an automatic temperature switch?

I checked again and this time it got hotter than before up to 70c so its not a thermoswitch

If you bought a hard drive with no warranty...I'd say that should have aroused your suspicions.

Those temps for the CPU? are too high, what processor is it?

What fan/heatsink are you using, is it working?

Do you have case fans running to cool the inside of the case?

The hard drives i bought all brand new about a year ago its the mother board and the processor i replaced. They have a heatsink with a fan of coarse but i dont know why its getting so hot

yes i have compound on the heatsink the fan works it runs about 2500rpm and they both came with the mobo when i bought them.

Try this test to see if your case is overheating

Leave the side off and direct a small room fan into the case

the BIOS gives me mobo temp and it is at 30c. ive been doing all these tests with the case mostly open but with the
side panel still against it with the fan. think it could be a bad processor?
