The laptop seems to be working faster but unfortunately the original problem is still there. When I access any folder, a window pops up, even if i am not online, is says 'data execution problem' then: 'to help protect your computer, windows has closed this program - windows explorer' then if i click close, the computer freezes and closes all programs except firefox (i dont even use internet explorer) Then another window comes up saying something about Dr Watsons Postmortem Debugger. Any ideas on what to do now? Thanks.

If you are getting DEP errors which cite Windows Explorer as the problem program...all I can suggest is to run either sfc /scannow or do a repair install of XP.

How To Use Sfc.exe To Repair System Files - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic43051.html

DEP is supposed to close programs which operate within Windows...not Windows itself. See What Should I Do, etc. at http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/e...bf1033.mspx#E1B

http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_turn_off_data_...ion_errors.html

I also find no Google hits at all for "data execution problem" as a string.

Dr. Watson is a part of Windows, a reporting tool, http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...w.mspx?mfr=true . Replaced in Vista and succeeding versions of Windows.

You might do a search for any Drwtsn32.log files and see if they shed any light on what might be wrong.
