BleepingComputer.com: BSOD on XP Home - Dell

Getting BSOD on all attempts to start windows XP home (unk SP#). Normal boot to windows I get the windows loading logo and progress bar then the BSOD. safe, safe w/network, safe w/cmd, and last known good all get instant BSOD


I can boot to BIOS and (F12) Boot menu without a problem. F12 is a Dell diags suite. All tests pass. fairly comprehensive including HDD tests.

BSOD Error codes
tech info: STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x82F8A008, 0x00000102, 0x00000000) (normal)
tech info: STOP: xx(xx, 0x82F68420, xx,xx) (safe)
(google search didnt return any hits)

xx=same as above


Using repair (Dell OS disk supplied with system), Install windows, (F8) agree with license.

At this point I dont have a choice of OS to repair.

I tried to delete (-: ) partition but it hung

It seems to me that everything on C: has been deleted and a format of HDD and a reinstall of all software is needed. Is that correct?

It seems to me your file system is corrupt, the best thing to do is delete all partitions, and start afresh

tried the E: partition this time. Said it couldnt delete that partition... I pressed continue and then it could not read the drive any longer...

Tried to partition available space and got BSOD

can I assume from the lack of help this HD is not recoverable?

You could run the correct, respective hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic on it...to be more certain of it's functionality.

FWIW: Why are you using FAT and FAT32 partitions for anything?

That setup looks possibly like a "storebought" system with 1 40GB hard drive and a recovery/restore partition put in by the system manufacturer.

Which is probably why...it's a good thing...that you cannot delete that partition. 4GB partitions don't serve much purpose in the world of computing these days.

That partition size data you provided...doesn't make much sense to me. What partition is Windows XP on?

Actually I'm helping out a friend. Its a Dell 3000. Must have come with Fat32. Optimal here is retreiving the data more than saving the HD.

Becuase of those 2 partitions I thought it may be a virus that reformatted the drive.

I'll give those tools a try as I think I can use the CD. Do you think I will need a boot disk?

The utility will use either a floppy or a CD, it will be bootable .

The bootable CD didnt work (WD .EXE file). So I tried the drive in a know good computer just to make sure it was just the OS and not a totally bad drive. XP Pro scanned the drive and dealt with the corrupt files. It now boots to the user window but I cant go any farther as I dont have the PW.....but that is by far the best I have done...

I was able to read the drive on the know good system so I have high confidence the drive is good.

One other thing I noticed was the D-connector for the power seemed to reboot the drive. So I am now using the connector next in line. That could be the source of the corrupt files.

If you dont have email alert check back in a day or so and see if it's really fixed or just a faint.

It did boot all the way to windows and all the files where intact.
