BleepingComputer.com: adapter not connecting

Hi Guys.
Last weekend I thought Id splash out and buy a new laptop and try to network my home, It cant be that hard
Anyway I'm still trying with no luck.
My new laptop and linksy Router/Modem are connecting fine and internet access if fine.
I have an old PC running windows XP, so I thought id get one of them USB wirless adapter thing so I could run my old PC wirelessly.
My old pc recognized the Adapter the adapter is flashing but most of the time the little icons on my task bar say not connected and wireless connection unavailable, the two little monitors have a red cross on them.
Now I have had it connected before but only for about 10 seconds then it drops out for about 1 minute the connects again for 10 seconds with excellent signal strength the drops again. this could happen quite a lot, then it just sits there doing nothing.
I have tried disabling A.V and firewall.

any ideas why the adapter wont connect or stay connected for more than 10 seconds ?

Sounds like you have a bad Network adapter. Either that or its your motherboard.

Try using it on your Laptop.

Do this by disabling the adapter that came with it from control panel -> network connections. Right click the active one and click disable.

Then plug in the USB adapter and see if you get the same problem.

Hi Mate, thanks for the reply.
I just tried what you said although I couldnt see how to disable it in control panal, so I disconnected instead, hope it had the right effect.
I loaded the drivers of the d-link wireless adaoter onto the laptop and plugged in the adapter when prompted, the I got a wireless connection wizzard come up that said scan or enter the SSID which I did, then it told me to select the network from the list below, but there was nothing in the list.
Pretty much the same result I get when I try on my old Pc most of the time although like i said I have had it connected for a few seconds.

So the laptop has no problems on its own?

No. its fine on its own. as soon as I clicked connect the laptop connected, it pretty much connects as soon as it boots up.
I just cant get the adapter to connect to the router ot the router to connect to the adapter, sorry dont know whats meants to happen really, I thought it would be as it said on the box " easy to install" not a very good start to my wireless introduction.
do I need to change settings in the router or something, I did take it back to the shop yesterday and they said if its flashing it must be working ok and AI need to adjust my security settings, so I came home with my tail between my legs and tried again.
Obviously no Joy.

Sorry to hear that.

It sounds like you bought a faulty Network adapter. I would try returning it for a new one.

Hey Newb4life.
Justnthought Id let you know, the adapter was at last found to be faulty.
So they took the D-link one back and gave me a Netgear adapter to replace it.
I was up and running within 10 mins. of returning home.
Its amazing how much time you waste trying to get something to work when all the time its not you or what your doing but faulty equipment.

Anyway, just thought Id let you and others know.
