I am working on an XP system that won't complete the boot process in regular or safe mode. I can open task mgr and also get to the run command, but don't know how to access system restore. The desktop will not load and device mgr shows no problems. Thanks

Yes you can.

You can invoke the System Restore tool by running:

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

in either Start, Run or from Task Manager, File, New Task.

But it sounds like you may have some malicious software on your system (malware) that is preventing your desktop from loading properly (no desktop icons?) so a System Restore may not help you in the way you think it might!

If a SR doesn't get you going, you should consider posting to the Am I Infected forum for expert assistance.

If SR does get your going, then you should do some malware scanning as the next step.
