I keep having problems with my internet connection.
sometimes I can repair the connection via the icon other times I have to restart as the icon does not respond. Sometimes I get an error message in device manager saying that the drivers for my wireless adapter cannot be found and when i reinstall it I still can't connect.Sometimes when shutting down I get an error message about the connections tray not responding.
I have run Anti-virus and Anti-spyware scans and nothing has been found.

Log on as an administrator, go Start > Run and type: "cmd". In the window that appears type: "netsh winsock reset". When the program is finished, you will receive the message: "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset." Close the command box and reboot your computer.

Go Start > Run > type: "cmd" In the window that appears type: "ipconfig /flushdns". Close the command box.

Go Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and and choose Properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically". Reboot.

Warning: Some Internet Service Providers need specific DNS settings. You need to make sure that you know if such DNS settings are required before you make this change.

Reset the TCP/IP stack in addition to WINSOCK.

Windows XP
Open up a command prompt (Start > Run > CMD)
Type the bolded commands in the command prompt window:

Reset TCP/IP Stack: netsh int ip reset reset.log
Reset WINSOCK entries: netsh winsock reset catalog

When finished reboot

I reset these items but the problem still happens

Do you still get this problem if you connect to the internet through a wire (ie. don't use wireless)?

Its a communal wireless network so I can't connect directly but I am the only user who seems to have this problem

I reinstalled my wireless adapter using the latest software and the connection still keeps disconnecting. The computer slows down sometimes and the network connection icons do not respond when I try to repair the connection.They also show as being connected even when I have unplugged the adapter.

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any errors at the time you lose the connection.

To open the Event Viewer go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Alternately, go to Start > Run and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

Check in all the categories.

If you find an error that occurred at the time right-click on it and select properties. Copy the information in the window and post it back here. This will help us diagnose your problem.

I would try reinstalling ZoneAlarm.

I reinstalled Zonealarm but it still happens.Also the computer will freeze up sometimes and stop responding and the only way to get it working again is to turn it off by the on/off switch.It is also taking a long time to start up.

Right click on the C drive in Explorer and go Properties > Tools > Check Now (under Error Checking). Check both boxes then click "Start Now". A message will pop up saying that Error Checking will run after you restart the computer. Restart the computer and Error Checking will run automatically after the restart. After it’s finished it will restart into Windows automatically.

I did the error checking no errors were found. It still freezes up and takes a long time to respond. I tried to uninstall the wireless adapter but the installshield program keeps stopping without doing anything
