First off, first time posting on a forum like this so hope this topic is in the right section,

Basic details: Laptop, Dell Inspiron 6400, windows xp, almost 3 years on the go, 2gig RAM, Wireless net connection

Explaination of the issue; earlier today my computer crashed while browsing the web and I rebooted only to find Internet Explorer (8) no longer opened and my antivirus (Mcafee) was stalling and crashing. I tried to run a virus scan with mcafee but it crashed. I then tried a system restore to a previous restore point but this had no effect on the issue. I had a backup installer for firefox so I ran this and can use this browser to access the web. I uninstalled IE and Mcafee with a view to reinstalling both, i reinstalled IE from a backup installer but the issue remained the same. On trying to download the Mcafee files (which I had done before for a previous issue) firefox crashed. This happens every time firefox tries to download a file, either and add-on or otherwise. I investigated further and found that when I double click the IE icon, iexplore.exe appears once if not twice in the task manager. I had been running the wireless connection on a static ip, however when i went to try and change this back, explorer hangs when i click the 'connections' tab in internet options (though not for any of the other tabs), the same happens on trying to reset IE from the last tab in internet options. I have Malwarebytes anti-malware installed and ran a scan with this but it came back empty, however the last update for this was last week and if I try and update the program crashes.

Other points to note are, msn messenger runs ok but cannot connect, I also have Yahoo Music Jukebox which hangs on startup now.

I understand I have outlined many issues here, however I think they are all related to a common problem, the only solution apparent thus far is to reinstall windows itself but I would hope this is a last resort. I have run a hijack this scan and the log follows below.

Thanks in advance to those who take the time to read this and for any assistance given

Hello,

We don't analyze HiJack This logs in the All Other Applications forum, so I have moved your Topic to the Misplaced HJT Logs forum so we can help you get the proper logs posted in the proper location. We only allow topics with such logs in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum so that you get the best help available from those who specialize in malware anlaysis and removal. It should also prevent you from receiving ineffective or even potentially dangerous advice whether well meaning or not.

Please read and follow all instructions in this guide: Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log. Following the steps in this Guide will allow the HJT Team to quickly help you with specific fixes for what may remain on your system.

Please complete all the steps in the Guide. If you can't perform a step, then skip it and continue with the next. In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create a Psuedo HJT Report as part of its log.

When you have completed those steps, please start a new topic in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum as directed in the Prep Guide to post a new log.

If you have problems creating the DDS logs, please post back here and you will receive additional instructions.

When your new DDS/HJT log is posted in the proper forum, please reply to this topic with a link to your new topic. Once that is done, a Member of the HJT Team will analyze your log and assist you with step by step instructions to clean your computer or otherwise advise what needs to be done.

Thank you for your cooperation and good luck.

The BC Staff
