I see the remains of Norton on the log but no antivirus is running. Could you tell me why Norton is not running? -------------------- |

I enabled normal start-up and this is what happened: I got three error messages (the first was spybot sd resident has encountered a problem and needs to close. the second said system settings has encountered a problem and needs to close. the third said application error EAccess Violation in module TeaTimer.exe at 0006E60e...) I can open Norton now, and it says the norton firewall is off (but windows firewall is on). The computer is back to being insanely slow. I managed, after waiting forever everytime I clicked something, to shut down spybot sd, ad-aware adwatch, comcast desktop doctor from the taskbar panel to see if it would make the computer faster, in case you need to know I did that.

Did you got the usual error ("Cannot find the 'file:///") too? By the way is it "Cannot find the 'file:///" or "Cannot find the 'file:\\\" and is this the whole error message?

This is the exact error message:
Windows Internet Explorer Cannot find 'file:///". Make sure the path or Internet address is correct. Before I attempt those things, here's what's happened over the past hour: right after I posted the last log, I got the following messages, one right after the next: Services.exe Application error The instruction at "0x0103f0e8"referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written". Then a message came up that only lasted 60 seconds before it shut down... I didn't have time to write it all, but the gist was this: This system is shutting down. .......... C:Windows/Sys 32/services.exe Status code -1073741819 It shut down. I turned it back on to get the same message about IE (as above) and then box came up that said: To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Name: Services and Controller app Publisher: Microsoft Immediately after that I got another window prompt that said: This system is shutting down...... This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM status code -1073741819 |

OK I was able to uninstall spybot and disable adwatch and I deleted the entry R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iehome&locale=EN_US&c=63&bd=PRESARIO&pf=desktop with HJT.
Go to start => All Programs => Startup => Right-click on the Pin shortcut inside the Startup folder and delete it. <- when I do this, the only menu that comes up beside startup says "empty". Computer seems to be ok for the moment. I thought I was facing a disaster earlier. The slowness lasts for the first 10-15 minutes after the computer is turned on. |

The problem was that System Configuration Utility was used to disable startup items or services. This is like suppressing the symptom but not curing the disease. I know many people use and advise use of System Configuration Utility to disable startup items. But the utility is designed to use for diagnostic purposes and the Windows should run in normal startup mode. The startup items could be manged with (free) programs and the services could be manged from Windows services.
QUOTE The slowness lasts for the first 10-15 minutes after the computer is turned on. We need to take care of this before we proceed. Part of slowness could be due to automatic update features or virus scan scheduled to run at startup. I personally set only my antivirus to update manually.

I see Teatimer is running. It might ruin all the registry fixes. You said you uninstalled Spybot S&D.

I thought I did... I deleted both spybot entries in Add/Remove programs (there aren't there anymore) and the icons on the desktop after that. I see, however, that the spybot resident comes up on start-up icons. What did I do wrong?

I think I actually removed Spybot now using msconfig. I see that the cloaker.exe you had me delete earlier is back and I've clicked fix check on it to no avail. I'm sorry for the extra trouble.

Great. Now we just need to find the entry evoking the error. To avoid a possible 15 times (there 15 entries) enabling entries and rebooting, bring up System Configuration Utility and enable the following (5) entries at once:
SunJavaUpdateSched HP Software Update ctfmon.exe Universal Installer Desktop Software Reboot the computer: If the error did not appeared go on enabling another 5 entries. When you find the group with 5 entries causing the error write down them and disable the first two until you get no error. Then enable one of them and you would now which one is evoking the error. If this is all too complicated either you enable the startup entries one by one and reboot each time to find the faulty one or just enable the above five and reboot, then tell me if you get the error. -------------------- |
