Hello everyone, I went to do a system restore last night from a restore point i created a few days back and it didn't work.
I deleted Windvd by mistake and thought i could get it back using the restore point.
It seems Window media player won't play DVD's now as WinDVD has IndeoVideo 5.10 codec.
Any advice please........

When i say deleted WinDVD by mistake, i meant i never use it, only Windows media player10. I never thought removing it would affect WMP10.

What is your operating system and service pack?

System Restore will not reinstall software that has been uninstalled. Is it possible to reinstall the missing software?

Can you be more specific about what makes you think it "didn't work"?

How far did you get in the process, did you get any error message(s) along the way, did you get a message about nothing being changed when you restarted after an apparent successful restore attempt, etc.

System Restore is a good target for malicious software so after the malicious software gets installed, it will be harder to remove.

What kind of malware scanning software are you using and have you used it lately?

Some Norton products with certain options enabled can thwart a System Restore - does that apply to you?

A different problem, but Windows Media player is at version 11.

Hi, I'm using XP, sevice pack 3.
System restore done it's business and rebooted and said nothing had been restored with "no errors".
I like Media player 10. I know there's an 11.
This is the message i get when i try to play a DVD:-
Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

Then you have at least two problems - you can't play your DVDs and System Restore does not work.

Windows Media Player does not play DVDs without help (a CODEC) that would have to be installed bu some other software that has a DVD CODEC compatible with your hardware.

You said you had WinDVD installed - this is a Corel product and they have a free demo version you can download from here:

Is that what you had before?

From what I read, you can download a demo version of the Corel WinDVD stuff for free, install it (and it will install the necessary CODEC) that should make WMP work with DVDs since the CODEC is now there.

If you uninstall WinDVD later because you never use it, it may take the CODEC with it and WMP will stop working, so you can choose to never uninstall it (even though you never use it), or search for other free DVD CODECs from other sites, and there are several popular places.

There are also other places to get free CODECs, like hamluis suggests.

That will hopefully get your DVD stuff working again.

You still have a System Restore issue and I think that is Norton (which can be fixed) but let's work on your DVD problem first so we don't confuse things.

Hi, sorry for the delay in replying, I managed to find my disc for winDVD4 and reload it after nights of searching. Now i can play DVDs on windows media again. LOL.
Still the problem of system restore.

I think if you download the free CODEC pack that hamluis mentioned, you would not need to have winDVD installed, but it is up to you what to try but at least it is working again and you know why.

I personally do not have Norton installed, but have seen where it can interfere with a System Restore because it wants to "protect" your system.

This may help..it must be saved as a vbs file and with that extension .vbs...so copy and paste to notepad rename it whatever.vbs make sure it is not saved as a text file .txt...find the done file and double clcik.. I hope this works..it did for me
