restart loop windows xp

Now I do not have any more blue screens but the first thing I did when I turned on my computer was to plug all my external hard drives into my computer and began to drag files. However, my computer automatically restarted and continued to restart. I took off my external hard drives and after a few more loops, i managed to get into windows. I put the external hard drives back in and it went back to the restart loop.
This morning, I restarted without the external hard drive and it did not restart out of no where yet.
Could it really be because of my external hard drives?
I have windows xp sp2 professional and my external hard drives are Western Digital My Books

We'll need to disable the automatic restart setting so that you can see the error message being generated. With that message, we can narrow down the problem and find a solution.
Start your computer but do not attach any of your external drives.
To disable automatic restart on system error:
1. Right-click on the My Computer icon (either on your desktop or in the Start Menu) and click on Properties.
2. In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.
3. Locate the Startup and Recovery area and click on the Settings button.
4. In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.
5. Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.
6. Click OK in the System Properties window.
Now, start connecting your external drives and do whatever you've been doing in the past to cause the system to restart.
Eventually, you'll trigger the system crash. Instead of restarting, though, you'll see the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), it will look something like this:

Now, get out a pencil and paper and copy down the information given about the crash. Specifically, everything that appears below the Technical information: line (be sure to copy down that long number exactly!)
Post the info here and we can start to figure this out.

Your drives are formatted in NTFS, I believe because it's the NTFS.sys driver is crashing. The SR.sys driver is System Restore. I'd wager that System Restore is trying to engage the removable drives, using the NTFS driver, which results in the crash.
Luckily, there is a hotfix from Microsoft available here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897574/en-us
Download and run the hotfix, then reboot. Let us know if the problem reoccurs.
Also, ask the person who reinstalled Windows if they reinstalled all the latest drivers for your system.

i plugged the drive in again and as expected, received another restart
however, this restart was actually a successful restart and i'm back at my desktop now
is it really safe?
