how do i make an exact copy of my hard drive to anexternal harddrive using windows xp pro any help would be appreciated

Go to the website for your brand of drive and you should find they provide a utility to clone your drive. For example, Seagate provide DiskWizard, which is a limited version of Acronis TrueImage:

EASEUS Disk Copy Free Disk Copy, Disk Clone, Partition Copy Software. Sector by Sector for hard drive backup freeware. - http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/
