Hello, my second build, I have intermediate experience.
The mother board I'm looking at (or any other I may consider) only has one IDE connection. Here at newegg.
Any other motherboard I've ever dealt with (all my computers are over 2 years old) has two IDE connections... One for DVD + Floppy and another for 2 HDs.
The question is generic, for my new build can I hook up my main HD and 1 DVD drive through this single IDE cable? Later when I add an extra HD I'll use SATA, right?
Thanks for your time!

The motherboards with only one IDE connector these days...still support 2 IDE devices.
My two systems are like that.
I put the PATA hard drive on the end connector and the optical drive on the "middle" connector and it works fine. This was all changed a couple of years ago.
If you want more PATA connections, just use a controller card.
