When I try to boot my computer it shows the dell logo and when that is finished loading all I get is a black screen with a white blinking cursor in the top left corner. What does this mean and can I fix it? It's an inspiron 6000. Thanks.

Turn it on & as soon as the Dell logo goes away start tapping the F8 key.
You should get a screen offering startup options
If you get the screen use the arrow key to hilite "Last known good configuration" & press Enter.
If you don't get the screen restart the unit & go in the BIOS setup [I think it's F2] & see if the hard drive is listed.
If not then it [the HD] has failed.

Thanks for the fast reply. I don't get the screen with F8 but under BIOS is says under device info that there is a 80 GB HDD. Is that what you mean or should it be listed somewhere else?
