So my wife's computer (10 month old Acer with 4 gb RAM and 500 GB harddrive) will initially start up, but then go to the black screen and then freeze up. It will just begin to start counting down from 30 seconds and then freeze up.

Somebody told me the RAM might need to be reset........were they drinking or should I try it??? :-) The computer is about 350 miles from me right now, so the details are a little hard to come up with, with my wife "I hate this computer" feelings right now.

This looks like a site I'll be visiting often!!

Thanks for any help.

Have you tried a system restore to a date before the freezing problem began?

I don't think the computer will let her get that far. The way I understand it, she turns the computer on, it immediately goes to the black screen, starts to count down form 30, and generally freezes up around 29.

Thank you very much for those links!! I will give those a try. We tried the "tapping" the F8 key, and it did come up to the advanced page, but then froze up again.

Will try booting directly into safe mode. Thanks again!!
