I was running XP sp2 and the storage drive shows a ? over the shortcut icon. I have tried to set the drive as a main and in other computers but can't be found. I think I can see it in DOS as F

I assume the drive is failing and need to copy it using x copy if I can. Like I said I think it is finding the failing drive as drive F:

I want to copy it to a new folder on my C: drive but need to make the folder first to put the drive in.

Can someone please help me make a new folder and then copy the failing drive to to the C: drive new folder. any help would be great.

yes I'm a rookie in dos. I know nothing about it.

thanks for the help

Let's back up .

Does the drive appear properly in the system BIOS?

Does it appear properly in My Computer?

What data is reflected for this drive...in Disk Management?

Disk Management In Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000/

Disk Management - http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_management.htm

I don't know if it appears in bios. How do I that? It does not appear in xp windows under (my comp.) If I hook it up to the other machine running vista and go to the ms dos mode from windows. I can type in F: it says invalid parameter or something. It also does not see it under my comp. on that system either.

But if I start the vista comp and hit the F12 (boot from). It will see the Maxtor drive in the boot from: has this: drive 0 (I think C drive), drive 1 (Maxtor broken drive), cd rom, etc. I really don't know anything about bios or dos. I have the vista machine with a 250 GB drive with over 150GB free space and the Maxtor 80gb drive I need to get the info off.

hope this helps

I looked at the disk management and it says:

on line Disk 1 C: 111.78GB NTFS (heathly)

not on line Disk 2 74.55GB un allocated

on line Disk 3 H: 1397.26GB Free Agent NTFS (healthy)

no media ROM 1 says nothing

no media ROM 2 says nothing

The drive is clicking at startup now.

Thanks .

Disk Management reflects the drive properly and fully functional.

Is this your drive...http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds_fa_desk_us.pdf

I see that it has a 5-year warranty.

Have you tried this link, http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?loca...000dd04090aRCRD?

If not, I suggest you do so.

If no joy, then try http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/

Follow the instructions for diagnosing your particular drive, since they have multiple models with Free Agent in the name.

The free Agent is new. The drive in question is the maxtor that is saying:

not on line Disk 1 74.55GB un allocated It is showing black not blue like the others.

Generally speaking...if you have data on that disk and it fails to reflect in My Computer and Disk Management reflects it as all unallocated space (nothing install, not formatted)...chances are that the drive is fading or it is not properly connected.

Check the connections first...then go to http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/ and download the applicable diagnostic utility for your Maxtor drive...and run it, per directions.
