What distro are you using?

What kind of setup do you have?

Lets see what kind of a mix is out there...

I have 3 old machines given a new lease of life with UBUNTU 8.10

1 very modern thing I made up; an industrial panel PC with a Touch screen and a multi streaming audio path. Built the thing up from components. Used 8.10 again for that.

Not too happy with 9.04. I'll try it again in a few months after the boys have had a chance at it.

I'm very impressed with 8.10.

I personally use openSUSE as a desktop :thumbsup:

as well as a
File Server (Samba),
Web/FTP Server (Apache),
Print Server (Cups) and
Database Server (MySql).

Who/What else do we have out there??

I use linux mint6 on my desktop IBM 2.8ghz pentium4 with 2gb ram. On my laptop1300mhz 256ram I use Vector standard 6.0. I enjoy both and I have tried just about all of the user friendly distros out there.

Mint is a better fit for me than ubuntu even though its based on Ubuntu. Vector is a light and fast distro best suited for my aging laptop. I use it all the time and get just as much done as my Mint desktop.

To be honest I don't have a lot of experiance with other distros. Vector looks interesting I may give that a try - Thanks for the tip.

The Panel PC thing amazes me; I had no idea it would work as well as it does - it needeed a bit of tweeking to get it like that. Using 3* Alsaplayer hooked into Jack, I can get 3 concurrent independant stereo audio output streams! It'll play: wav, Flac and mp3 files all mixed up and/or together, any way you like - uses about 90% of the resources doing it but still it's very stable. Alsaplayer is a great bit of software - again takes some setting-up but rock steady once done.

I have Fedora x64 installed on Desktop and SUSe 11.1 installed on laptop.

In general -- I like Fedora for system management better. If you like to setup multiple file systems /var /tmp /home /boot / .... and you like to crypt some and not others and you like configuring RAID vols and you have lots of disks and disk space and you like to really over complex your system -- Fedora is great.

I installed SUSe on the laptop -- because i had problems getting Fedora i386 video working. finally gave up. SUSe installed no problem and the Video is fantastic. I have dual booted system with XP Pro and SUSe desktop is so much better (nolie.) If however if you want to crypt your system SUSe (in my opinion) is not as flexible. Works fine -- just not as flexible as Fedora.

Linux -- alternative, better.

I've never bothered with encryption before,
that's probably because I have nothing worth encrypting. :trumpet:

(Not that I'm boring or anything...) :flowers:

I had to look it up :thumbsup:

LUKS dm-crypt it's all new to me.

I just posted to one of your other threads about Ubuntu.

I like Ubuntu 9.04. Had a couple of issues at first, but that may have been me or my machine's fault.

Been trying out all the different media players, and wish there was one that had all the eye-candy like Songbird, but would play ALL formats. But I guess you don't get that in windows neccesarely either. (WMP, Quicktime, FLV. etc...)

Triple booting - Windows XP Professional, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit, Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Linx

Running Ubuntu 8.10. Have a dozen+ live CD's for when I get froggy. Cut my teeth on Fedora Core4-6 here at BC. Favorites of mine are E17 (any distro with enlightenment enviroment is awesome), Custom Nimblex (custom live CD), and of course Puppy, PCLOS, and DSL

Yea BlackSpyder,
I used to use Enlightenment rel-16 back in the day almost 10 years ago.
Truly awesome graphics and sound effects. Multiple backgrounds with a slider,
partially transparent windows would flip around on opening and closing.
I used to set window frames to open with a drafting measurement effect, very cool.

I've gotten older and switched over to AfterStep,
which is not as heavy on system resources, but
I must admit there is no match to Enlightenment graphic effects!! :thumbsup:

I still use ETerm from time to time, it allows a background image,
partial or complete transparency and color shading (very cool).
