How about VideoLan's
VLC Media Player, it's cross platform.
VideoLan Project

VLC can play them all, and even convert from one format to another(not much eye candy tho), but I like the versatility of Songbird. Changing the "feathers" to suit what I like, all the add-ons, and I think it is even developed by, or part of Firefox somehow or another. My wife likes the way it fetches and display the lyrics real nice.

A quick update.

I've, in the last 3 days, put UBUNTU 9.04 onto 2 newer style laptops and they run very well so I'll have to change my opinion.
The first laptop had 2 gig of RAM! (that always helps) I've noticed that UBUNTU runs so much better with a lot of ram but you can say that of all things.
The second has 1 gig of ram.
Both machines detected and auto configured the Lan, wireless network and wireless mouse correctly.
On the other hand the Audio system did not correctly configure the master volume control. It was only a moments work to correct this.
Loading the restricted package sorts most of the Video and Audio codec issues.

What really impressed me:
Very fast OS install time.
Fast Boot time at start-up.

So, top marks for Ubuntu 9.04

Graham.

I am using a Knoppix 5.3.1 live dvd. I have an old Compaq computer that triple boots between Fedora 6, Windows 98 and a full install of Knoppix (though I realise Knoppix is not really intended to be installed). I have also used Xandros, for a couple of years; that was my first Linux. Then I used Ubuntu for about 3 years. Their forums are just excellent and I learned tons of things without ever even posting a question; everything I needed to know was there already! I am also a very enthusiastic user of Puppy. I think some guys shy away from it and use Damn Small instead, because of the name --- Damn Small is a cool, guy name, Puppy is too cute sounding. Nevertheless, I have used both and find Puppy to be much superior.

I've ran just about every distro under the sun.

Currently on my main box I have Ubuntu Ibex. I have a testing server that runs Slackware 12. I have a laptop that at the moment is running Arch. I use the laptop just to goof off on and usually do a lot of distro hopping with it.

I have used a number of distros: Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Mandriva, DSL, Linux Mint, DreamLinux. The one I use most though is Ubuntu. DreamLinux is nice to look at with the ObjectDock type bar at the bottom for your shortcuts.

Hi Peeps,

Currently using Sabayon 3.5.1 - it will always be my favourite Gentoo based distro, followed by Ultimate Edition (a specially garnered copy of Ubuntu made by 'Thee Mahn') had the latter installed within Windows XP Pro SP3 - goofily uninstalled 1.8 thinking it was causing problems when it was Panda Internet Security filling my hard drive with backups (due to user error I might add). Daughter's machines have VectorLinux 6.0 (Slackware deviant) - very nice polished distro using xfce4 by default - the paid for version comes with a packed second CD with E17 - very cool but as it is in development still can be a bit unstable - need to know on which button to click to restore it if things do crash (using E17 that is - normal desktop is rock solid). Was very impressed that under WINE DK Educational Software runs (wouldn't run in Win2k, XP, or Windows 7!)

Best regards,
chameleon437

Currently have PCLOS2009.2 and Mandriva latest release on disk. These 2 are my favourites so far. I have tried every distro I can get my hands on. I used Knoppix live cd this morning to look for some lost files. For me, the ability to really play around with my OS is why I am a Linux user. I have a dual boot disk with XP and Mandriva on it so I can access the data on my mobile phone through XP. In fact that is my only gripe with Linux, it wont talk to my phone.

Currently using Mint (via Mint4Win). Tried others but could not get my wireless to work but Mint did it without even blinking!! Also faster with my Mobile Broadband than vista & again Mint just connected & ran the dongle first time.
Really impressed.
Pondering going dual boot with Vista / Mepis 'cos Mepis live cd also found my Dell wireless no probs. Though with Mint working alongside Vista should I go for dual boot ? Oh the choices!!!
It's great that there is so much to try out ....

I don't know about dongles but a Dell Latitude E630 will run with Fedora 11 and (not at the same time) Ultimate Edition 2.2 and connect with the built in wireless card without any difficulty.
