Connection Limited

Sometimes when I boot up my machine my Local Area Connection is "limited or not connected". It's an easy fix. I just turn off the cable modem wait about a minute and turn it on again and it works. But is there something I can change or do so I don't have to do that constantly? I connect directly to the modem however I used to use a router and since I switched to just the modem I've had this problem. I do remember somewhat that I changed the default ip to 192.168.2.1, but it's doesn't look like that now. Could that be the problem? And how do I change it back? I know it's not the modem because I tried it at a friends house with the same results.

Any ideas?
