Well I just bought a new lap top and the first thing I did was to rip McAfee out by the throat, no offense to the prior post but IMO McAfee ranks as low as Norton.

I have no idea how they have duped the general public all these years outside of major advertizing and new computer people not knowing any better!

norton 2009 is a lot better on ram etc. now, mcafee isn't!

is there any reason you wouldn't try another brand suite?

e.g. Eset Smart Security,Norton (shudder). Bitdefender, etal.

McAfee has excellent detection rates due to their Artemis technology. However, it is very heavy on resources unlike Norton.

Since ya'll are so up to date on McAfee how about you take a look at my post in internal hardware???
Please and thanks! ... By the way McAfee does what it does now ... when it was free it was much better.

There is no "perfect" antivirus, every antivirus has weak points, they all have good points. Some antivirusses
use much recourses, others are known for there good scanning... I say it again: there isn't one antivirus which is the best.

With that said, one should look at trusted lists in which every aspect of an antivirus is tested (how often does it update?, how good is the real-time protection? Do i have to pay for it, or is it free? etc.). Based on what this person finds important, it should choose its software, not based on a discussion in which everyone says: "mcafee has stopped alot of trojans, so choose mcafee" or "AVG is free, so choose AVG".

Also note that some antivirusses have a "switch", which allows a program to use more or less recourses (this might get in handy when you wish to play games), another thing you should consider when choosing your software...

For example, look here:

http://www.technobuzz.net/top-antivirus-softwares-list/

Very well put none of them can catch every new thing out there, that is the beauty of forums like this. IMO no matter what many feel or think a paid program in the long run will protect you better, none stay free forever so sooner or later you will catch up.

Norton has been crashing my PC alot. I google all the files and the type of crash and almost every time, norton is the cause.
