Check Disk stops at stage 2

I'm working on a computer for a customer and I'm stumped as to how to fix it. On boot check disk runs. It gets to 18% on stage 2 and freezes then boots regularly. This also happens when i run check disk in command prompt. The laptop is:

Acer, Aspire 5570Z. Genuine Intel ® CPU T2080 @ 1.74GHz
2038 mb Ram
32-bit operating system. Windows Vista Home Premium

Other than having a few corrupt files, it is in full working order. I'm puzzled on how to fix the check disk.

(I have very little knowledge of vista, other than playing with it since i got this laptop, so it could easily be that I've missed something.)

Got any ideas?
