Malfunctioning External HD

I have a computer that had gone completely dead on me. I recently bought a new laptop (Windows Vista) and i wanted to transfer the data from the old laptop to my new one. I took out the hard drive in the old laptop and put it in an external HD enclosure (SABRENT 2.5" IDE Hard Drive to USB 2.0 Enclosure). The Hard Drive is a Fujitsu 80 GB IDE Laprop HD. After I put in the enclosure and install it I connected it to the laptop thru the USB and I get this message:

"One of the USB devices attached to this computer is malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."

The LED light on the enclosure goes from red to green and I've tried different jumper positions but I continue to get the same error message.

Am I doing something incorrectly?

Try reseating it in the enclosure again
If it's still not working, send it back

In your initial post...you say the computer "went dead."

Well...that hard drive may be dead, as well as other components.

I wouldn't expect a hard drive from a laptop...which has problems...to necessarily work properly just because I removed it from the laptop.

Why don't you try running a diagnostic on the drive?

To do so, it cannot be in a USB enclosure...must be directly connected to a motherboard.

Your new system will do, since it's not required to boot the system to run the diagnostic...the motherboard must just detect the physical connection.
