BleepingComputer.com: Flash Drive Access Denied in My Computer

Recently, Avast informed me that I had a Trojan virus on my PNY 16GB flash drive. When I removed the malware, it also disabled my ability to open the drive from My Computer - I now receive a message that "E:\ Access is Denied." The only way I can open it from there is to click FOLDERS on the My Computer screen and select the folder from the left pane that appears. The icon has also changed from a removable drive icon to a simple unlabeled folder.

However, I am able to open it via the Auto Play dialog box when I plug the device into the computer. Any thoughts as to why this is happening and how I can get My Computer to allow me access to the drive?

The problem you are facing is because of Trojan virus in your PC. So in order to solve your problem, get your PC formatted and then install latest live antivirus and scan your PC or else in order to use your flash drive emergency, format your flash drive from your friends PC where the PC is not affected by virus.

Mike, thanks for this. I'm not sure how reformatting my computer will help a flash drive - the virus was on the flash. Do you mean I should reformat the flash drive? I have experienced the same issue on other computers that I know are clean. Should I move all the data from the drive and then reformat? If so, wow would I go about reformatting the flash drive?

Go to the "Am I infected" section run the programs the such as http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php & http://www.superantispyware.com/ both have free versions, if your stick was infected your machine is more then likely infected also. The two program will find things that AV many times will not, I just worked on a machine that was three months old with only adult use. MBAM found 171 infections and following up with SS found Three more.

Thanks Phil - I don't see the "Am I Infected" section, but I do see the free download - I'll give that a try. Haven't heard of the 'super' site, but I'll look into that one as well.

FYI: when I plugged the drive into my work computer, everything works fine. Crazy...I'd like to reformat the drive, but what should I reformat it as - NTFS or FAT32?

try to change your AV Avast into Avira, update and scan your flash drive...I think Avira can help you to rid off that Trojan in your flash drive... and for the security of your flash drive, better to use USB Disk Security.
