A web site I previously accessed without problems now suddenly demands that I download Flash player in order to be able to access the site's content. I'm wary of being tricked into downloading a trojan.
What's the official site where I can download Flash updates safely?

You can go here, to get the latest version:
Install Adobe Flash Player
If you have any other versions of Flash installed, I recommend you follow these instructions, first:

Thanks. How can I tell if my computer already has a previous version of Flash installed, or if installed what version it is?

Look in Add/Remove programs but it doesn't matter. You need to uninstall the old version using Adobe's uninstall tool before inhstalling the new version or it won't work.
