My XP box uses Comodo Firewall and Avira Anti-Virus... But that's not really an option on my old 98SE clunker.
What's recommended for taking care of vintage machines and protecting them from malware - specifically an anti-virus and firewall?

Personally I've tried AVIRA and NOD32 together and it works great.

Avast for Antivirus.
Either Sygate or Jetico for Firewall.
Superantispyware is supposedly compatible also as is Winpatrol.
Personally I'd just use an antivirus and firewall, as being such an old machine, anything else may put too much of a strain on its limited resources. Even with Avast, depending on your system, you may need to disable some of it's less important functions.
