Hi guys my mother is having issues with her laptop in that its not turning on, you press the power button and the fan spins up to full speed for about 5 seconds then turns off, also the screen doesnt come on, this happens with the power cord in or out, this is weird as it was working fine a couple of days ago.

Laptop is a:

HP NC6000
Pentium M 1.6ghz
512mb RAM
120GB HDD
Win XP

Cheers

sounds like a bad motherboard(assuming laptops power supplies are built onto the motherboard, not seperate like in a tower PC)..

Society leans heavily on computers. If you have the power to take out computers, you have the power to take out society.

Does the status LED show the battery charging? Does it act any different with the battery removed? If you have access to a Multimeter what output if any does the battery and the power cord (the jack that plugs into the laptop) show?
