I'm planning on installing GIMP, an imaging tool similar to Photoshop. Before I install it, I'd like to hear the average user's experience with it. A couple of questions: Can GIMP make pictures transparent? Is GIMP malware-free? Are there any strings attached to the program? I can answer question 2 and 3.
GIMP is malware free, and many of our Members use it. No strings attached; it is an open source application. Be sure to read the installation instructions carefully, though. Cheers, John -------------------- Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one should be silent.

GIMP should run on any NT-based version of Windows (NT4, 2000, XP or Vista)
http://download.cnet.com/GIMP/3000-2192_4-10073935.htm You might be interested in the user comments; I think that if you download GIMP from the link, an installer is included. John -------------------- Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one should be silent.

Apparently, it requires some learning, and isn't easy to use, unlike Photoshop.

Do I have to install the GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment before installing GIMP?

GIMP is pretty simple to use. I learned to make userbars and sigs with it pretty quickly. You can find plenty of tutorials for it on youtube.
As for GIMPshop, it seems to be standalone but I am not positive. QUOTE GIMPshop is a modification of the free/open source GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP.
It shares all GIMP's advantages, including the long feature list and customisability, while addressing some common criticisms regarding the program's interface: GIMPshop modifies the menu structure to closely match Photoshop's, adjusts the program's terminology to match Adobe's, and, in the Windows version, uses a plugin called 'Deweirdifier' to combine the application's numerous windows in a similar manner to the MDI system used by most Windows graphics packages. While GIMPshop does not support Photoshop plugins, all GIMP's own plugins, filters, brushes, etc. remain available. Due to the changes to the interface, many Photoshop tutorials can be followed in GIMPshop unchanged, and most others can be adapted for GIMPshop users with minimal effort. Thanks xblindx.
Did you install the GTK Runtime Environment when you installed GIMP? -------------------- Avira AntiVir Personal | COMODO Firewall | Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware | SpywareBlaster | WOT "There is a saying: yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. Honestly I don't remember having to install anything else. I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure I just downloaded the GIMP setup file.

You no longer need the GTK engine for GIMP (it is now bundled in the GIMP For Windows Package).
Does Transparency, Malware Free, Open Source, Free. i've used it in both windows and in its native *nix and its almost as good as PhotoShop best download is here at the source. http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html some plug-ins have to be added on after installing GIMP, check them out here. http://registry.gimp.org/ -------------------- ![]() You can't bash an eMachine until you've owned one, then you just use a baseball bat. |

You only need the plugins if you want to use them.
I've used GIMP in contrast to Photoshop, and quite honesty I can get things done faster and more efficiently on GIMP. If you've learned Photoshop, its a bit of a move to readjust to where everything is, but not too bad. GIMP handles almost every major file format out there, including PS file formats, even if they come out strangely, and the blending settings aren't the same. If you know what to do when saving formats, then it'll come out transparent. Quite honestly, unless you go into larger photo editing, you'll never need half the features of GIMP. -------------------- Q6600, 4GB g-skill, 8800GT, P5N-D motherboard ![]() My art |

I finally installed GIMP, and it's working great. If I can remember correctly (I'm at school and no GIMP on these computers :D ) , go to Help in the top toolbar and then "online help" or something similar
