I have avast. There is a red x on my a. Can not uninstall avast to reinstall it. My husband said he deleted it but it is still there. Somewhere it has said to go to safe mode and uninstall it. I am not very good on computer. Can anyone help me step by step on how to uninstall avast. It will not uninstall from add/remove program.

You can download Avast! uninstall tool from here: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

Instructions are given on that page.

How to boot into safe mode : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/

Check and note down your avast! installation folder, it should be something like : c:\program files\avast
If it is different, then you would have to browse it, when using the avast! uninstall tool.

Hi fishbone123,

Romeo29 has beat me to the punch, so please forgive the duplicate info. However, there is some additional info, so I'm posting anyway. :flowers:
-------------------
Let's try using the Avast uninstalling utility. Go to the following webpage and follow the instructions there--the instructions are pretty clear but if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask:
http://www.avast.com./eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

If you are not sure how to get into safe mode there is a tutorial here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...showtutorial=61

Let us know how it goes. And I have to ask because your answer is very important--why does your husband want to get rid of Avast? Have you tried to replace it with another Anti-virus? If so which one? It is not safe to be on the internet without an antivirus installed. Before you remove Avast, you should take your computer off-line--unplug the cable if you are on high speed or just disconnect if you're on dialup.

If you have installed another antivirus, you may need to uninstall both to get one working correctly when it is reinstalled. Never install more than one antivirus that includes an On Access/Real Time scanner at one time. If you do need another antivius, download the following, as it is very simple to use, and once Avast is gone, install it before going back online:
http://www.free-av.com/en/trialpay_downloa..._antivirus.html
And I may be obliged to defend
Every love every ending
Or maybe there's no obligations now,
Maybe I've a reason to believe
We all will be received

Can you be more specific or clarify what you mean? Is the red X on the avast icon or somewhere else? Its possible your system is infected and the anti-virus was disabled by the malware.

If this was avast home free you have to disable its self-protection before you can uninstall it. These instructions are on pages 79-81 of the avast user manual online at www.avast.com.
