BleepingComputer.com: Registry Problems?, Virus Problems?, Computer SLOW!

I bought an eMachines laptop (I know off brand) but it was on Black Friday for $395. In addition, I bought an external hard drive. When I plugged the external hard drive into my laptop; the harddrive downloaded a backup software called Memeo. This backup software would pop up everytime I downloaded something or wanted to uninstall or open a file. So I eventually uninstalled the backup software (MEMEO) and my computer began to run EXTREMELY sluggish and slow.

1. I ran a Nortan scan believing that it would fix my computer situation. The results are below:

As you can see, Norton 360 only deleted "cookie" threats. So I rebooted my computer and it was still extremely sluggish and slow.

2. So, I thought I had some internal issues that Norton 360 could not fix, so I downloaded SpyBot. Please see the attached:

As you can see Spybot did not find any threats.

3. So I went to google.com and found StopZilla. I bought this program and thought it would solve my problems. Below are the results of StopZilla scan:

As you see StopZilla deleted on some "cookie" threats. My computer is the same: extremely sluggish and slow.

3. Now I am fed up and needed to really find a way to get my computer back to normal. So, all of a sudden, I see a RegCure commercial and get excited cause I was thinking maybe my problems have been solved. Well I buy the darn thing (RegCure) for a special of $29. Below are the results:

I restarted my computer thinking that it is fixed. I rebooted and guess what? My computer is even more EXTREMELY sluggish and slow. So I ran Regcure again and it found more registry problems. I fixed them through REgCure and restarted my computer. GUESS WHAT? It is still EXTREMELY Sluggish and slow.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I can not even stay on my laptop too long cause it freezes and takes too long to upload a file.

Is the external drive still plugged in, even though you uninstalled the software?
Did you remove the software using Add/Remove Programs?

No the external drive is not still plugged in.

What version of Norton 360 do you have installed? If you have a valid license, and are using version 1 or 2, you are entitled to a free update to Norton 360 version 3, which I highly encourage. Norton 360 version 3 is fully Vista compatible, contains many enhancements and new features and uses very little system resources. Another feature of Norton 360 version 3 is the ability to scan is the ability to scan in Windows Safe Mode, and some infections are only detected in this mode. I can provide you with the step-by-step instructions for updating once I hear back from you regarding the version you are currently using.

Since Norton 360 is a comprehensive security suite, you should not load any other third-party, real-time scanning software, such as StopZilla, as it can cause conflicts and slowdowns, and leave your computer vulnerable. Please remove this application and then restart your computer.

In regards to SpyBot, it will work fine alongside Norton 360, however you need to disable both the "TeaTimer" and "SD Helper" features, which can cause conflicts with Norton 360. Also, make sure that the Windows firewall is disabled, as the Norton Firewall will handle this for you, and having two Firewalls running at the same time will cause conflicts.

If you have not already done so, open Norton 360 and choose "Check for Updates." When the updates have been installed, restart your computer and then run the "Check for Updates" again just to make sure that you have all of the available program and definition files applied. If any more updates are applied the second time, please restart your computer after they have been installed.

Please let me know if any infections were found, and if so, the name(s), and also what version of Norton 360 you are using so I can assist you further.

Hello Mike,

The version of Norton 360 I have is Version: 3.0.0.135. How do I disable the "TeaTimer" and "SD Helper" features? How do I make sure that Windows firewall is disable?

I did check for updates and restarted and did it again.

I uninstalled StopZilla. What about RegCURE? Should I uninstall RegCure?

SPYBOT TEATIMER

* Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
* On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
* Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
* Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
* Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
* If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
* Exit Spybot S&D when done.
* (When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]

Please run the Windows 'Chkdsk" command 2-3 times, rebooting in between to see if this helps. If RegCure is a real-time scanner than I would recommend that you remove it so it does not cause conflicts. Your issue may also be related to a lack of available system resources, so removing any non essential Start up items may also help.

Follow the steps that "garmanma" listed for changing the settings in SpyBot and after you do so, go back in to SpyBot and make sure the changes are made.

Please let me know the specs of your machine.

To access the Tea Timer and SD Helper functions, open SpyBot, select the "Mode" menu and choose "Advanced." Next, click on "Tools," select "Resident" and then deselect the boxes next to "SD Helper and "Tea Timer." These functions interfere with Norton and can cause problems. Therefore, you wiull want to leave these settings disabled.
