6 Pin Connector Is it needed

I jam thinking of buying a Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT for my computer and it has a slot for a six pen connector. My computer doesn't have one, so is it necessary for this connector to run the card, or is it optional?

Yes, It must be connected.
It supplies additional power to the video card to make it work.

[If it wasn't neccessary the co. would spend the $ making it & putting it on]

Many card manufacturers include a dongle with the card that adapts two molex power connectors to PCIexpress 6-pin connectors if you don't already have one. Just make sure you have two molex power cables free.

A power supply has wires that have connectors on them .
A "molex" connector is just a just a 4 pin connector.
A power supply usually has at least 1 small 4 pin connector [used for the floppy drive & some other things ] & larger 4 pin connectors.
The adapter "cable" [actually wires with connectors] would attach to the larger 4 pin power supply connector[s] & then to the video card.

Be advised that not every power supply is sufficent to run a GeForce 9800 GT.

The requirement is listed as,

Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 26 Amps.)

Yes make sure your PSU can support the graphics card. If it can't easy fix is get a new PSU with the right connectors. Otherwise either get a new PSU anyway, or work around the problem as stated above.

If your power supply cannot run the card, almost any Corsair, Silverstone, PC Power, and OCZ power supplies over the 400W threshold will be able to power the card effectively. A good thing to look for, if you're going for another type of PSU, is the addition of SLI or Crossfire certified power supplies. Those with certification must be able to support at least two graphics cards and should have everything you need.
