BleepingComputer.com: RAM or Motherboard issue?

Howdy,

I have recently built a new computer and am having some issues with the memory posting properly. I don't know if its the RAM or the MOBO. (I'm suspecting the MOBO, however)

RAM posts as 800 when it should be 1066. I have tried to up the speed in the bios but the maximum value allowed is 800. Not sure where to go from here. The machine runs fine and, as i understand it, I won't notice much of a difference, but I kind of like things to work the way they're supposed to. Call me crazy

By the way, I know these are exactly primo parts (by any stretch of the imagination ) but when a friend gives you a $300 budget to build them a machine, you do what you can for 'em.

I have the exact same memory with the exception that mine is 2 X 1GB = 2gb.

Mine also shows as 800MHz.
PC Wizard even shows it as PC6400.

Did you manage to find a solution to your problem or just opt to let it slide?

By the way, I should of mentioned this in my original post, gskill tech support says it the MOBO. And, of course, Asrock tech support says its the RAM. <sigh>

I just took another look .
We do have the exact same memory!


On mine the only way I can get it to work at the max speed is to upgrade my CPU to one with a 1333MHz Front Side Bus.
[My Xeon has a 1066MHz FSB]

I have my CPU overclocked with a 1280MHz FSB & the memory is now running at 960MHz.

Your motherboard specs show, Memory Standard DDR2 1066 .

You may have to go in the BIOS & set it manually but yours should run the memory at full speed.

What CPU do you have ?

When you say I, "may have to go in the BIOS & set it manually..." are you talking about resetting the CPU or the RAM? Because if its the RAM I have already tried that. The maximum speed the BIOS will currently allow is 800.
At first i thought it might just need updated firmware/bios, but according to the little sticker on the MOBO it has the latest of both when referenced against the Asrock website.

I was talking about setting the memory speed in the BIOS.

Your motherboard/CPU is quite different from mine as the memory controller for yours is in the CPU not on the motherboard.
That may have something to do with not being able to run the memory faster.

[I'm not in to AMD CPU's so I can't say for sure that the memory controller being in the CPU actually has something to do with it though]
