You do need McAfee IF you don't want to uninstall it and use something else.
The choice is yours.
You are not required to use the McAfee offered by AT&T as a part of your internet service.

I do agree with you about beginners being scared to death of computers. When I got my first one, I was afraid to download anything-I was afraid I'd blow the laptop up. Eventually I got over that.
The best advice I can give is sit down at your computer. Play with, see what it can do, what it has on it, learn all you can about it. And if you have any questions or concerns, we here at Bleeping Computer will help you as you learn.

Thank You Queen-Evie and Quietman 7 for all your help. I don't think I will keep the McAfee, but for now it's useful until I get something else installed. I was thinking about Avira for an Antiviris and Comodo for a Firewall...Any ideas or comments on these two?
