Running Windows Vista Home Premium with all updates in place. PC is a new Dell - 4 gigs of RAM and quad ~ dual core Intel processor.
PROBLEM: Approximately every half hour of internet use but sometimes up to an hour's surfing, I lose the ability to access any web site. Outlook or Windows mail email continues to function normally, but use of any browser yields the same problem. A reboot always fixes the problem, but can get annoying when I may be in the middle of something important. I also have a laptop, but even though I cannot access the internet on the Dell, I can do so without problem on the laptop. This leads me to assume that the problem is not with the network as such, but with some setting withing my operating system. My ISP concurs with this.
I have tried many things - restarting the ADSL router/modem, dong a "netsh winsock reset" at the command prompt. When I run the network diagnostic in Internet Explorer, it comes up with the "Widows has found an error, but cannot fix the problem automatically - please contact your network administrator, or ISP". No error number is given. The connection to the router is wireless, but using an ethernet cable makes no difference.
When I enter Network and sharing centre it tells me I have only local access and not internet access, so I guess it is a DNS error maybe, or a firewall problem, perhaps? Disabling all firewalls have no effect, however. The modem itself at this stage will not come up using the IP (http://192.168.1.1) which usually accesses with no problem, when everything is working.
Whereas none of the above is fatal, I should very much like to have uninterupted access! Incidentally I first notices this shortly after I installed Firefox, but uninstalling Firefox has not solved the problem. If only for interest sake I would be pleased for a solution - the greatest computer brains on this forum may be able to help!!
Thanks.
