I have a Dell Optiplex Desktop. I bought a new DVD Burner as the last one I had only read DVD's and did not burn them. I am having some issues getting the computer to recognize the new drive. Do I have to keep the old DVD ROM in the machine and installed the new DVD burner along sided it. How does the master and slave system work with two optical drives attached. I have only one connection going into the new DVD burner ( I think it is the Sata connection). Both the old DVD ROM and the hard disk have two connections going into the back. The new DVD drive opens and shuts okay, just computer doesn't have it listed under my computer or device manager. Unsure of what to do, I'm sure I haven't set it up correctly. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

"I have only one connection going into the new DVD burner ( I think it is the Sata connection). "

SATA does not use the Master/Slave jumper, there is no setting for either.

If you only have 1 cable going to the drive you are missing 1 .

Since the drive opens & shuts OK I would say you have the power cable hooked up but are missing the SATA cable that goes from the drive to the motherboard.

If you bought the DVD burner new what is the exact brand & model ?

What model is your Optiplex ?
OCZ StealthXstream 700W,Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R , E8500, Arctic Freezer Pro 7, 3GB G.Skill PC8500,Gigabyte Radeon HD 4850 OC [1GB ], Seagate 250GB SATA II X2 in RAID 0, Samsung SATA DVD burner.

It is a Dell Optiplex GX280 and the DVD Burner is a HP http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...ntent-_-text-_-

I am not that familiar with Sata, and the ins and out's of the cables inside the computer. So the Sata Cable should be somewhere inside the tower. No other connection seemed to fit the back of the new DVD drive. What do you think?

no, actually the sata cable is an added cable that you have to buy, and there should be a sata port on the motherboard and one on the drive, and the cable goes between the two. it will look somethin like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16812123170
