Vista or Norton?

Vista or Norton? Norton IS won't install anymore; trying to track down issue

Hi, I'm running a system with Vista Business SP1 3gb ram and 320 gb hdd. A few weeks ago Norton Internet Security threw up a popup and said it had problems and needed to be reinstalled. Countless uninstall and reinstall cycles later, Norton still won't install. I raise the issue here because one strange thing I'm noticing is that in my event log I'm seeing a message that says

Code integrity determined that the image hash of a file is not valid. The file could be corrupt due to unauthorized modification or the invalid hash could indicate a potential disk device error.

File Name: \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\System32\drivers\NIS\1005000.087\BHDrvx86.sys

Now I've pulled the .sys and .cat files and used the SDKs signtool, which indicates that the file is valid, so what could be causing Vista to conclude it isn't?

I've done these things--run Norton's scanner, run Malwarebytes and combofix. Norton and Malwarebytes don't find anything; I'm not sure what combofix is telling me. I've also tried installing NIS in safe mode with networking and the same failure takes place.

Any ideas on things to look at?

Did you use the Norton removal tool to uninstall Norton?

I agree with garmanma. The Norton removal tool will work. I have had members use it to clean their system to rid Norton forever. :huh:

Yep, between my own efforts and Norton support, the removal tool has probably been used 10 or more times, along with some additional manual cleanups and a couple of remove/install cycles in safe mode. Always the same result.
