External USB Drives not found by Vista

My two drives which are both usb devices, one with external power and one powered by USB alone are not being recognised by Vista.

The cabling is fine the USB ports are working correctly as far as I can see and neither device requires a driver.

Thoughts please?

are the enclosures inside the drives IDE or SATA?
