Well, I didn't expect any problems personally. My antivirus and firewall up to date and I downloaded and ran several different conficker tools and the reports were clear. My kin and kith did same. Whether ruse or riot I don't know.

I am still wearing my tin foil hat waiting on Y2K to strike.

If you run a decent AV and Firewall you have nothing to fear.

Funny how I said Asia...thanks for the link.

----------

The doomsday did not happen. A few computers were infected, and there are still more quantity of threats than just Conficker such as MyDoom and Netsky, and trojan5.ddt, etc.

This is only because of the lack of knowledge in users. Users do not know any better. Most people are not security researchers, like me or Grinler or any other security specialist.

The flaw was patched last October (2008). Who knew, right? Standard Windows users just went about their activities with no fear, and no knowledge of the threats that are available to attack their computer.

Who else was naïve? THE MEDIA. The media automatically assumed that most computers would not have a patch. "So why not go ahead and scare the world that a worm will infect a serious amount of computers," (sarcastic media).

When I found out it was the medias fault, I took down my site's threat level down to low.

However, this worm is very dangerous. I cannot emphasize that enough. The worm is so "celebrity-like" that their is a team of security researchers called the Conficker Working Group.

I think these "celebrity worm" issues date back to SQL Slammer. Oh my, I won't go in to that. :flowers: End of January 2003...oh no.

Oh my...talk about targeting domain names in such a public and massive way.

Jay, not to be a jerk, but since when are you a security specialist or researcher?

I for one do not consider myself one. I save those titles for the people who know what they are talking about

I have tested quite a bit of software, and have investigated several large worms, including Conficker.

I don't attest to quite an expert or specific title, I just say researcher or specialist for those who have general knowledge about how threats work, and the ability to remove them effectively. I have been in internet security research for about six years. I only share my truest, best research on my blogs. Posting on forums are simply different than blogs, of course. A lot of my research is centered on Internet threats, and Phishing. I have an Anti-Phishing software in the works.

Only being 19, I have not had the chance to take an Information Security course. I'm still in Visual Communications going in to my third year. I would not mind getting ISSAP certification.

I did not mean, however, that you were anything specific. I do know that you have knowledge about Internet security, so I was just speaking in general terms.

Jay, not to be mean or anything... but having a website with basic guides does not make you a researcher, or specialist. Some of the information you provide is outright wrong and to some people, can even be dangerous depending on the circumstances. Suggesting a registry cleaner without giving the appropriate warning is definitely not good practice either. Telling people that every threat or virus is removable is giving people with file infector infections false hope. Yes there used to be a time when that statement was true most of the time, but those days are gone. Sometimes the safest and only way to be clean is through reformat.

That's just after a brief looksee at your site. I bet If I really looked, I could give you a list...

My advice is, if you truly aspire to be a researcher and specialist.... let your work do the talking for you. Don't push the title. Watch, read and learn from those who already have a reputation. See if they flaunt their status... might just give you some insight into why people respect them so.

I appreciate all the confidence in figuring out my professionalism. All this is not needed, really. I am not a professional, yet. However, I have edited potentially argumentative topics on my site, but I will not stay here at BC and be mocked by any means. I am not of a huge level yet, and I do not post my research too often because I am not confident that people want highly technical details. Send me a PM and enlighten me with some more info if you like. I've already had much of the info verified by actual professionals, so enlighten me -- please. Like I said, though--I have general knowledge!

Now that the world is slowly returning to normal I (I am not a professional because of the lack of knowledge).
While researchers and specialist converge on the matter I have drawn my own conclusion on the thing.

Jay, we were not trying to mock you by any means. It is just that if you categorize yourself a certain way, and people have never seen you fit that category in the past, it makes sense to question it. No?
