Help with removal of Startup Programs

I just went round to my girlfriends house and they want me to help them speed up their computer, i got rid of all the junk they dont need like games they have installed and done a full defrag and disk cleanup too. they told me the thing that takes the longest is the computer loading up, now i know what some of programs are but i just wanted help on what ones i can safety remove without causing any harm to the computer?
