this happened in the last few days. i haven't added any new programs. my comp is: dell 1520 laptop, xp home, service pack 3, 2g ram, 40g free hard drive space. i have run, avg free, avast free, malware antispyware, and super antispyware. all were run in safe mode. i defragged, and ran disk cleanup (c, properties, disk cleanup.) all to no avail. thanks for reading about my problem. i hope someone can help. thanks, boyd.

You might try running the command chkdsk /r.

Start/Run...type chkdsk /r (with space between k and /) and then hit Enter. When screen opens and goes through its spiel, answer Y and hit Enter. Reboot and the chkdsk /r will execute. When completed, it will reboot the system.
