BleepingComputer.com: New laptop memory does not work

I have a Hp ze5600 laptop. I used cpuz to check my memory it shows that i have ddr pc2700 it is a 256mb stick.
I bought a 512mb stick to put is and the laptop will not boot. i made sure that i got ddr pc2700

here is what i got

in cpuz next to pc2700 166MHz in in ()

the bios version is KH.F 23. i checked hp website there is a 25 version but it is to make a bootable floppy. if i need to update the bios how can i do that with out a floppy. the other bios listed is older

did you try putting in only the 512mb stick and removing the 256 mb stick? with some motherboards both sticks have to be the same size. I have a mixed setup in my HP dv8000us, Hps are normally pretty good about that, but its hard to tell. A bios update will not do you any good whatsoever, I dont suspect, I would download memtest86 and put it on a USB stick and boot it up from their and run that and see if it finds any errors.

i tried the with just the 512 stick and it still will not boot up can not even get to bios just powers up and shuts off.

It seems that it may matter from whence you purchased this SODIMM module. Did the vendor specify that this module would work in your laptop?

If so, it might time for an RMA.

thanks for the help. i think what i got may not work. from the links and something other places i looked it seems that the pc2700 is iffy that it will work. I will pick up some pc2100 and try that

Well...if Crucial says PC2700 will work, they will replace it if it doesn't. They are reliable.

The stick may just be bad, its known to happen, anywhere from 2-6% of all parts from even the mainstream manufacturers leave the factory DOA, higher numbers from non mainstream brands. I would just RMA it for another same type chip, and see if that works. if not, then try a different type.
