Can I remove the RAM/MEM chip from my old computer (about 10 yrs old , but only used it for about 4 and a half yrs) and use in my newer computer? How will I recognize the chip when I open the back of the puters?

Possibly, but likely not. A computer as old as your old one will likely use memory which would either be incompatible with a newer motherboard or would be more of a detriment than an asset due to its slowness.

Most memory modules, with some exceptions resemble this, at least in general:

And are installed perpendicular to the plane of the motherboard, like this:

Important rule:
If you do try to install the memory, don't force it! If it doesn't fit, then it's not supposed to be there! Note the notches on the bottom edge of the chip, these need to line up with the bumps in the slot. If the number of bumps and notches aren't equal, don't even try to install them!

added to is that every ram has a different voltage so if ever you tried to put a RAM to the motherboard there is chance that it may burn up.

For DDR1 I think is around 2.5v
For DDR2 I think is around 1.8v

you can see it on the slot of your motherboard

Hehe, I can do that sometimes. I just don't want you to accidently fry anything, is all.

www.crucial.com is a good place to start looking for memory. They can scan your machine a determine what type of RAM it will take and recommend what configuration would be optimal for it.

More than likely, you're using the 32bit version of Windows. 95% of Windows users use it, and you'd probably know if you were using the 64 bit version. If you're curious, click the Start menu then click Run... type winver and press enter. This will show a little Window with your OS version info. If it doesn't mention x64, then it's 32 bit.

512MB kit (256MBx2)
Part #: CT446165 • DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR333 • 2.5V • 32Meg x 64 •

This is 1 of the compatibles that is recommended as an upgrade of RAM for my system... it is a 2 pack,, im guessing that since I already have a single 256MB ,,I will have the spaces necessary 2 add both of the new 256MB pieces.
Yes or No?

edit: 512MB
Part #: CT405743 • DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR333 • 2.5V • 64Meg x 64
There is also this 1 available/compatible.
1 is a 32meg and the other is a 64meg,
I am guessing I will have to upgrade my windows 2 a 64bit if i go with the 64meg??

Amazing Andrew is Amazed at the volume of Tutorial Goodness at BC. Sometimes he forgets these things and refers to himself in the third person. Please bear with him.
