A free and trustworthy registry cleaning can be gotten from Microsoft's "Windows Live OneCare Online Safety Scanner". This is a run as you need it online app. (Not the same as the installed, always on "Windows Live OneCare.)

The link is:
Windows Live OneCare Online Safety Scanner

You can run the "Full Service Scan" or just "Clean up" which handles the registry cleaning.
I have run this a lot and never have had problems with it.
Sometimes it can be hard to get started if a machine is too messed up.

Most of the time registry cleaners will find a ton of errors but fixing them really is not necessary as it usually does not improve the performance of the system and if the fix was the wrong one, it can damage your system. It is best to just leave it alone unless you really know what you are doing and are 100% sure that what you are fixing is being the fixed the right way.
