Okay, the main problem is that my desktop background is unaccessible. I have cleaned the system with Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and Norton Antivirus 2005 (all updated with current components). I cannot change my background picture or access any of my background options. Another problem is that any shortcut made onto the desktop gets duplicated with a false shortcut. The real shortcut is deleted when the false shortcut is deleted. That's the main problems.

Please help I'm going

P.S. I seem to have a secondary problem with my mouse's right button. I'm not sure if it connected to this problem or not. I use a Logitech Cordless Trackman and I have installed the latest drivers, but still no use of the right button. Help if you can.

If you could do me a favor. First of all, disable Microsoft's Anti-Spyware, and then try running your Anti-Virus again. MAS will protect your systems from changes, including those changes designed to repair problems. Then post a fresh HJT log please.

I don't see any malware in there, so let's see if we can figure out the desktop issue. This is a little out of my area, but I'll see what I can do. What happens when you right click on the desktop? Does it give an error message? Do you get an error message when you try to change the background? It almost sounds like you do not have admin privelages on the box.

Nothing happens when I right click on the desktop. No error messages, nothing. Almost as if the mouse isn't working. I even switched over to a regular wheel mouse. Nothing as well. I can't right click with any mouse I install. The display option in the control panel is also greyed out. I can't change the background from a normal black background.

I'm also kinda worried about the double shortcut thing. Is it possible that I screwed up using HijackThis and made a virus/spyware unaccessible or undeletable (if thats a word)?

It sounds like the right-click menus have been disabled, which is sort of strange... do you have some friends that like practical jokes? And just for the sake of being redundant, did you try going through the control panel to change your desktop?

Let's check a couple of things... go to Control PAnel>click on Taskbar and Settings> Start Menu Tab> then click on Customize. Check in the menu box and see if "enable dragging and dropping" is checked. If it isn't, check the box. Then see if your right click menu works.

Okay, I did that and 'Enable Dragging and Dropping' was already checked. And I did go through the Control Panel to try and change my desktop. The Display tab was usable but any options on it where greyed out.

None of my friends touch my computer and if they did, I'm not sure if they know how to screw up the privileges or not.

I just saw something in your log I didn't notice before. Could I have you post a fresh log just so I can double check that it isn't malware.

I did stop the process rundll23 or something like that. Other than that I didn't do anything else to the computer.

No I don't. I did add it, enabled it, then disabled it but nothing seems to work. I did have some values in Active Desktop that were disabled that disappeared after I rebooted. I don't know where they went or what they were. I'm really not sure what the heck is even wrong. I've changed my privileges to administrator and everything but nothing seems to work. Should I turn Active Desktop on and then off? Or what?

Downlaod and run the following reg file:

Double click on it, and when it asks you if you want it to be added, say yes. Reboot, and see if that fixes it.

Well, it works and it doesn't. The way is does work is that I can use the display tabs and set up a background. It doesn't work in that it will only take certain pictures for the background, shows them in the display but not the background and doesn't allow me to really change anything. I rebooted twice just to make sure it had time to initiate but I don't think its working.

What else should I do?

Now we are up to using the OS disk for a repair.. do you have an OS disk, or just a system recovery disk?

I do have the OS disk. It is a CD with Windows XP Professional and Service Pack 1a. What should I do with it?
