In Device Manager (right-click My Computer, select Properties, Hardware tab), expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. For however many channels exist, in Properties\Advanced Settings for each one, look for a device shown as operating in PIO Mode. Change the Transfer Mode to "DMA if available".

Guide Overview
The purpose of this guide is to teach you how to Enable DMA on all drives.
Instructions
- Navigate to your control panel. You can do this by either the Start Menu-->Control Panel or Click on the link listed in My Computer.
- Double click your system icon, to bring up the system properties menu. If you do not see this in XP or Vista, please click the link 'Classic...' on the left.
- While in the system properties, please click the Hardware tab. Then click the Device Manager button.
- Now click on the plus sign [+] next to the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to expand that section.
- Then double click on the Primary IDE Channel to display the Primary IDE Properties window. Then click on the Advanced Settings Tab at the top of the screen. Now for Device 0, ensure that the Transfer Mode: selection is set to DMA if available. Then for Device 1, ensure that the Transfer Mode: selection is also set to DMA if available. Then, please click OK.
- Then double click on the Secondary IDE Channel to display the Secondary IDE Properties window. Then click on the Advanced Settings Tab at the top of the screen. Now for Device 0, ensure that the Transfer Mode: selection is set to DMA if available. Then for Device 1, ensure that the Transfer Mode: selection is also set to DMA if available. Then, please click OK.
- You may now exit all windows, and please Restart Windows.

You can always just use cdspeed to do a TRT/transfer rate test, if your drive is in pio mode then you won't get above 2x speed
