Floppy not responding, although recognized

Hello folks!

During the boot process my floppy is being recognized. Also appears in "my computer".

But when I try to show properties, I have to wait pretty long for an answer to show.

It says, that there is 0 bytes free and 0 bytes in use.
The function "check for errors" does not respond.
The function defrag does not respond.

When I put in a diskette and go on run A:, it says, that I should put in a diskette?!?

It's a standard Microsoft Floppy with a driver from Juli 7. 2001. OK, it's a pretty old driver but it should work after all...

I am running Windows XP Pro SP1 on my PC.

Does anybody have a clue to this one??

OS: Win XP Pro + SP2
MB: ASUS A7V600-X (bios version: 1009); chipset: Northbridge VIA KT600 + Southbridge VIA VT8237
CPU: AMD XP3200+ (2,2 GHz)
RAM: 1,5 GB
Graphics: ATI Radeon 1600pro (AGP, 512 MB) driver: 6.14.0010.6683
DirectX-version: 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Sound: SoundMax Digital Audio; driver: 5.12.0001.3663

Just a few questions:

Have you done any hardware changes lately? Cabling may be loose enough to be seen by the OS, but not able to read media.
When you turn the PC on, is the floppy drive light steady? Or does it turn off after it checks for boot media?
Have you tried more than one floppy?

We're going to make the merry-go-round go faster, so everyone needs to hang on tighter-just to keep from being thrown to the wolves.

I think your floppy drive is shot, buy a new drive and replace it.

Hi efizzer,

I did bye a burner and installed it last year.
When I boot, the OS recognizes the floppy and says "diskette drive A: in..." but the floppy led does not go on at all.
Did not try any other floppy so far.

Dear spocks,

How old is the computer?

How old is the floppy drive?

Floppy drives do go bad but I need to know your connection and the above answers to make a real suggestion.

Also, there is a real factor that you may have been overlooking. Cleaning.

If you have had your computer for over two years, you need to do maintenance.

If that is the case, I will be happy to instruct you on proper cleaning.

On the other hand, if the drive is bad, it is so cheap to buy a new one why stress over it.
