Ipod ipod doesn't sync and makes a scratching noise

I HAVE AN 80GB Ipod and it wouldn't update because it said i had too much music..
it then started acting up, so i restored my ipod
and now it doesn't sync with my itunes
it synced once..and only four songs transferred..
now NOTHING transfers
it also makes a horrible scratching noise when i attempt to sync it..
anybody know what to do? x

i've even tried putting my ipod into Disk mode and connecting it to the computer, it charges but it doesn't synchronize with the comp x

I have the same problem with a Nano. The Apple discussion boards have some help, but nothing that resolved my problem.

Have you tried the 5 R's?
Reset, Retry, restart, reinstall, restore.

There are a lot of people with a similar problem unresolved.

You can DL a manual for your iPod in PDF format from Apple.

One workaround was to uninstall iTune 8, and install iTunes 7. That seemed to have worked for one person. Again, on the Apple Discussions board.

You might have to send it out for repairs. That's what I have to do.

ahh none of that works..however now when i plug my ipid in it says, unknown device plugged in..or USB mass storage device is faulty (or something along those lines..) x

it now says : an ipod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly.
please disconnect and reconnect the Ipod then try again.

Basically the same thing happens to me. The message says the iPod is corrupt and that I should restore. So I click OK, and the option to restore
disappears. This happens over and over.

I'll step back and watch this thread in hopes that someone has a fix. (And if, in my travels, I find a fix I'll post it here).

If these guys here can't fix it, nobody can.

yeah i clicked restore and now i can't restore it at all =S nothing works now

1. Remove iTunes using Add/Remove programs.
2. Trash these folders:
C:\Program Files\iPod\bin
C:\Program Files\iTunes
3. Restart the computer.
4. Reinstall iTunes.


this may work for you, i tried it and it didn't work but it's a shot x

That would be a hard disk error of some sort. Hopefully it's still under some type of warranty.
