BleepingComputer.com: Help Me I'm Desperate!

I've been having an absolutely terrible time with my computer this week and suddenly remembered getting help on this forum many moons ago so I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on this.

Firstly my specs:

Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

AMD Sempron Processor 3000+
1.79 GHz
2 GB RAM

And the problem:

I bought a cheap DVD burner (internal) a month or so ago, and it wouldn't work but just kept on crashing. I thought it was just down to me being stupid and buying the cheapest burner I could find.

So today I went and bought a new one (Speedy 16X DVD Writer), installed it, and am getting the same thing! The burn process begins, then everything freezes. I have also tried TDK and Verbatim DVDs, both of which are usually very reliable.

I have legitimate copies of Sonic DVDit and Roxio, and have also tried burning with Nero, DivX and Cheetah DVD, and it's always the same problem.

I've updated the drivers and firmware. I have the pin in the back set to master and this is my only drive so that is fine too.

TOday I tried just formatting a blank DVD through Roxio, and this even crashed the computer!

The drive reads cds and DVDs perfectly fine, and Device Manager says it's functioning correctly. I am at my wit's end here cos as far as I can see, and from what anyone else has told me, there's no obvious reason why this should be happening.

What error messages are generated when the system crashes? Does the system reboot? Does the system freeze?

Have you checked Event Viewer for possible clues?

The system just freezes. Ctrl Alt Delete doesn't work to shut down the burning software, and eventually the mouse will freeze and I have to force shutdown. Will look into the Event Viewer now.

This has also reminded me that a folder has appeared on my desktop called 'initdebug' - it is an MSInfo Document which produces an error message of 'System Information cannot open this NFO file. It might be corrupted or an unrecognised version.' It then opens a 'System Information' window. I've scanned the folder with AVG and seems clean. It only appeared yesterday and I've been having these problems for weeks and weeks but thought I'd mention it.

OK I started getting 'Application Hang' Errors (6 in total within 2 mins, and then a final one 30 mins later). Here is the description:

'Hanging application Roxio_Central33.exe, version 3.30.65.4, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

Some of them also say:

'Fault bucket 380436299.

These are from when the system froze. I tried to do CtrlAltDel but the had to force shutdown, and have 3 event logs from that time:

Uninstall Roxio
Try DeepBurner, a free burning program, & see if the problem goes away .

It was looking good and got up to 37% write progress, but now the 'time remaining' is just going steadily up and up - has jumped from 3 mins remaining to 15 minutes remaining, and still going up. I feel a crash is imminent...

If you are consistantly using the same power connector from the power supply try using a different connector for the CD drive.

I have had the issue where 2 connectors are on the same lead but 1 of them simply doesn't work right.

What kind of power supply is in it & how many Watts ?

I'm not sure of the power supply - where would I find this out?

I will try plugging in a different power lead later on this evening though.

The power supply should have a label on it giving the make/model & "watts" .

If it is a brand name [HP, Dell, Compaq, etc.] what make & model is it ?

If it's not power or filter drivers, it might be resource related

We could use an advanced burning program to troubleshoot with, one that can clean corrupted filter drivers from the system bus, give us logs for analysis, all without burning a disk

I used to be fairly active in this field

I'd be very interested to hear about how I can do this without burning disks! At present, it seems to commence the burn process just enough to make the disk unusable and as such is costing me 70p every time I try. Not much I know but it all adds up!

Have plugged in the new power lead so am now about to go and crash my computer again :-/

Ok I'll give that a shot now.

I was reviewing the event log after that last crash and saw that the 3 events that coincided with the crash were related to AVG - could it be possible that something within AVG is conflicting with the burn process or reading it as malicious, and causing it to freeze?
