The 2 most common problems with installing service packs are malware and out-dated drivers.

Use this link to try a couple of free, online scans (to see if you're clean): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/usas...?showentry=1252

If you come up clean, then visit the website of the manufacturer of your PC and update any drivers that were released since your system was manufactured.

After checking all that, if SP1 still doesn't install there's a lot of other things to check. Could you let us know specifically what things you tried (and what Microsoft suggested)?

well i think you're in luck i was fixing a problem very similar to this for someone else about a week or so ago try this link then try to install SP1 again

"System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista"

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en

Overview
This tool is being offered because an inconsistency was found in the Windows servicing store which may prevent the successful installation of future updates, service packs, and software. This tool checks your computer for such inconsistencies and attempts to resolve issues if found.

No problem - I just collect these tools for use later on.
BTW - I added a link to the x64 version and the KB article in your topic here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic210219.html
