BleepingComputer.com: fully remove norton security center program from my laptop

Hello,

I have two AV programs on my laptop and I would like to fully remove the Norton Security Center. I already went to add/remove programs in my control panel, but I know there is more that has to be done to fully remove the program, however, that is all I know, I do not know what should be done to accomplish that, can you help me??? please!!!

I do not know what version of Norton you have but if you have an older version and those links do not work for the version you have, this one might....

You are very welcome.

It is highly recommended to back up the registry first. It is also best to use a program like Erunt to do that with as apparently the backup feature in XP does not really work. I do not use Erunt to do automatic daily updates but if you use it then you would probably be ok to not backup right before uninstalling Norton. If you have never used Erunt it only takes about five minutes total to install the program and backup the registry.

What do you mean by reactivate you system recovery?

Do you mean the system resore feature that is in the start menu>accessories>system tools?

If so, I never would have turned it off so I would turn it back on.

yeah, that is what I was referring to, I turned it back on, but one of the websites that you sent me to for erunt said that it should be turned off when using erunt., however, I have it back on now, so I should be okay., thanks again., for such quick responses.,

YIKES, I had no idea that the website would tell you to do that. I got the link to Erunt from a post made here by one of the moderators. I am sorry, I should have read the info on the link better. I never saw anything about turning system restore off when I got the program and I did not turn it off when I used the program and it seems to have worked fine.

Please make sure that when you turned system restore back on it made a restore point, it should have, but please double check and if it did not, make one. Turning it off deleted all of your previous restore points. I like to to copy a recent restore point and paste it into a serperate folder so that just in case something happens to accidentally turn mine off and clear em out, I still have a restore point that I can copy back into the folder to use.

I just now looked through the frequently asked questions on that site and see where it said to turn it off but it seems it is not necessary to do for the running of the program and says something indicating you can leave it on if you prefer. Seems like it was saying it is a better backup for the system than system restore is. I do not think I agree with that.

May I make a small comment? I hope it is stating the obvious but you do of course appreciate that you need to disable Norton before you attempt to uninstall it?


Which is your other antivirus program ?May we assume you have not yet installed it as, if you have and you have been running with two installed antivirus programs you MAY have caught an infection that you know nowt about

when I ran the ERUNT program it did create a restore point and saved it to the c:/drive under the date I ran the program., is that sufficient for my restore point?? or should I go into the windows control panel and create another? thanks again.,

If you have system restore turned back on it should start making daily backups again, but I would check it to make sure and if it has not made one then you should make one. Erunt would not have made a system restore point, all it would have done is what it is suppose to do, make a copy of a copy registry. I suspect that is what you are referring to when you say Erunt made a restore point but that is just a copy of the registry that the program made and that is different than a system restore point.

Personally, I want both, a backup of the registry that Erunt makes on occassion when I run the program and my system restore points which system restore in start>programs>accessories>system tools>system restore creates daily on its own. Those are stored in the System Volume Information folder and you probably cannot open that folder to check if it so just check its restore dates in the program itself.

I already had a system restore point for the day that I installed Erunt so I did not manually make one before installing Erunt but I did make one manually after it was installed. I usually make sure there is a system restore point already made for that day before I install any program and then I usually make one after it is installed. Might be overkill, but I really like the system restore feature and have used it quite a bit whenever anything goes a little funky on my system. In fact, shortly after the first time I installed Erunt and ran it, I noticed the icons for my folders had changed and after trying to get them to revert back without success, I just uninstalled Erunt and did a system restore to before I installed it and it fixed the problem. It can take care of all kinds of little and big problems so I use it a lot and check it quite often to make sure it is still making its daily restore points.

I later reinstalled and used Erunt and nothing funky happened so I really do not know what changed my folder icons but whatever it was, system restore fixed the problem. I highly recommed making sure you have restore points in the system restore program.
