Any help on this would be appreciated (Running Toshiba Satellite A100 -998 / Windows XP Media Edition 2005) My whole family uses this laptop so not sure what was executed or downloaded to cause the problems in the first place, sending this email from other computer as no internet access from the laptop. Keep getting NT Authority shutdown message, been stopping this by entering "shutdown -a" into the run box from the start menu Installed latest stinger tool from MCAfee which seems to have slowed down the NT Authority messages but PC is still running pretty sluggish and I cannot connect to wireless network so even tried hard wiring the cable broadband modem directly the laptop with no luck. When running MCAfee it either shuts down during scan or wont start a scan in the first place, downloaded a super DAT file on another computer from McAfee support site, burnt it onto a CDR and when I launched it on the laptop it said that could not find any qualifying McAfee product to install the latest definitions. I have also tried the McAfee scans in safe mode and tried to access the internet in Safe mode with Networking but both to no joy, Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 01:20:08, on 05/03/2009 Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16791) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Virgin Broadband Wireless\AffinegyService.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\ConfigFree\CFSvcs.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRecvr.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehSched.exe C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KService.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\SiteAdvisor\McSACore.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\MSC\mcmscsvc.exe c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mcafee\mna\mcnasvc.exe c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mcafee\mcproxy\mcproxy.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\VIRUSS~1\McShield.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\MSK\MskSrver.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\RegSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Toshiba\TOSHIBA Applet\TAPPSRV.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\X10\Common\x10nets.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Windows Desktop Search\wds_sl.exe C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\MBK\McAfeeDataBackup.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\GrooveMonitor.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\prunnet.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\reader_s.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KHost.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\Wcescomm.exe C:\Program Files\TomTom HOME 2\HOMERunner.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Download Manager\IDMan.exe C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~4\rapimgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\VIRUSS~1\mcsysmon.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\MPF\MPFSrv.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Download Manager\IEMonitor.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee\msc\mcshell.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\MQC\McpAdmin.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee\VIRUSS~1\mcvsshld.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\VIRUSS~1\mcods.exe C:\Documents and Settings\ROB\Desktop\HijackThis.exe R1 - Hi,
Unfortunately I have some bad news, your computer is infected with Virut. Virut is capable of infecting all the machine's executable files (.exe) and screensaver files (.scr). However, the problem is that the virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result, it may misinfect a proportion of executable files and therefore, the files are corrupted beyond repair. As of now, security experts suggest that a format and clean install, or destructive recovery if you have an OEM recovery partition, is the best way to clean the infection and it is the best way to return the machine to its normal working state. Backup all your documents and important items (personal data, work documents, etc) only. DO NOT backup any executable files (software) and screensavers (*.scr). It attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr files by appending itself to the executable. Also, avoid backing up compressed files (zip/cab/rar) files that have .exe or .scr files inside them. Virut can penetrate and infect .exe files inside compressed files too. I don't feel there is any point in trying to clean this machine. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that's how I see it. You can read more about it here if you want; http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2009/02/vir...s-throwing.html If you have any questions let me know. -------------------- MalWare Removal University Master
