I'm running a Windows XP home desktop. I've had it about two years, and have been mostly happy with it.. That is, until last week. After simply turning on my computer, I discovered all my files were missing. The folders were there as before, but my files were completely gone. I have Norton anti-virus, but apparently that wasn't enough to protect me from whatever nasty invaded my pc.
The odd thing is: everything was fantastic the previous night, and the files on the "guest" and "shared" accounts are completely unscathed. The only thing I did differently from normal was I updated my Verizon DSL to a faster speed.
I was wondering how I could find out what happened. I've run a few virus scans, which have all come out 100% clean. And I've checked the computer's log to see if suspicious activity occurred. Only some sort of power glitch is listed.
Being ever the optimist, I was also hoping there might be some way I could recover my lost files. Most of my information wasn't backed up, so essentially, I've lost everything. (Please no lectures here, I have learned my lesson, and believe me, I'm more than kicking myself.)
I have already installed and run Restorer Pro 2000 to no avail. Some of my files aren't even listed on it, and most of the ones I did manage to recover refuse to open. I keep getting the "this file is either missing or corrupt" dialogue box.
Strangest of all: the files I've tried to save since then won't show up on my side of the computer.. *headdesk*
Any help (or even sympathy) at all is much appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Katrina
